The Lesvos Bird Records Committee (LBRC) was established by the Hellenic Rarities Committee in its February 2nd, 2009 session.
The aim of the LBRC is to encourage visiting birders to submit their records, in particular to provide addiitonal details of national Greek rarities, local Lesvos rarities and breeding records of the scarcer breeding species.

LBRC decisions for 2009

The Lesvos Bird Records Committee (LBRC) has accepted the following records for 2009:


Whooper Swan | Αγριόκυκνος
Cygnus cygnus
One record:
4 on the Gulf of Kalloni off Mesa 1 Jan 09 (T Robinson). This is only the fourth record for the island.

Common Pochard | Γκισάρι
Aythya ferina
One record:
1 Polichnitos Saltpans on 28 Jul 09 (T Robinson). This is only the eighth record for the island.


RED-NECKED GREBE | Κοκκινοβουτηχτάρι
Podiceps grisegena
One record:
11-24 Sept 09, 1 off Skala Kallonis (photo: R Lawrence et al). This is only the third post-2000 record.

2 May 09, a sub-adult north along the Tsiknias River Valley (I & S Bambrough, S P Dudley). This is only the sixth record for the island.

EGYPTIAN VULTURE | Ασπροπάρης

One record:
2 May 09, a sub-adult at the Vouvaris River mouth (T Robinson). This is only the 10th record for the island.

GRIFFON VULTURE | Όρνιο
Gyps fulvus
One record:
1 26-28 Apr 09, first seen over Eresos on the 26th (Limosa group) and then the following two days (27th-28th) around the old dead goat pit at Madaros north of Kalloni (P & V Manning, D & B Bradnum et al). This is only the 11th record for the island.

Three records:
3 May 09, a sub-adult bird south near Efthalou (photo: I & S Bambrough, S P Dudley);
7 May 09, a sub-adult Kalloni Raptor Watchpoint (I Pitts, S Hill, P Bowley, A Bowley, A & Y Ford);
8 May 09, two birds north over Agios Ioannis (photo: P Solley et al). These are the 9th to 11th records for the island.

GREAT SNIPE | Διπλομπεκάτσινο

One record: 7 May 09, 1 Haramida Marsh (S P Dudley).

COMMON GULL | Θυελλόγλαρος
Larus canus
One record:
12 Sept 09, an immature at Polichitos Saltpans (R Lawrence et al). The sixth record for the island.
A second individual seen at Tsiknias River in September was rejected by the Committee as identification unproven.

EURASIAN TREE SPARROW | Δεντροσπουργίτης
Passer montanus

One record:
3 May 09, 1 with House Sparrows (Σπιτοσπουργίτης) Passer domesticus at the Petrified Forest Visitor Centre (R Harding). The sixth record for the island.
